Simon Stopped Him Mid-Audition… Then Gave Him an “Impossible” Challenge

Daniel Emmet appeared to be a professional opera singer prepared for a powerful but very unremarkable audition when he entered the America’s Got Talent stage in 2018. Simon Cowell, however, had different thoughts. Simon challenged Daniel to return later that day with an entirely different song—in Italian—instead of allowing him to complete his scheduled performance. It was the kind of unexpected turn of events that might instantly wreck an audition.

The majority of competitors would have freaked out. After learning the new piece quickly backstage, Daniel returned to the stage under much more strain. The risk suddenly made sense when he began to sing. Everyone in the audience felt as though they were witnessing someone perform something truly challenging in real time because of the strength, emotion, and control of his voice.

The audition is particularly noteworthy because of this. It required more than just hitting the notes; it required maintaining composure, taking a significant risk, and then delivering when the pressure increased. Simon’s “impossible challenge” was transformed by Daniel into the kind of AGT event that people continue to relive years later.
