Asanda Jezile, at 11 years old, appeared small in front of the lights but was totally confident as she took the stage at Britain’s Got Talent in 2013. The judges asked her what song she would be performing, and her response made everyone in the room cheer: Rihanna’s “Diamonds,” a major pop anthem and a very daring choice for someone her age.
It was obvious from the opening line that this would not be a charming children’s show. With the tone and timing of a mature pop artist, Asanda’s voice was polished, strong, and self-assured. She struck every note and gave the song her own unique flavor as she walked around the stage as if she owned it. Almost instantly, the audience began to cheer, and by the chorus, the theater sounded like a full-fledged concert.
The judges were taken aback. Alesha Dixon called her a “little diva” in the best possible way, while Simon Cowell was obviously astounded by how at ease she appeared in front of thousands of people. They also applauded her amazing stage presence and control. In addition to earning her four resounding “yes” votes, that audition propelled Asanda to the BGT Series 7 final and gave audiences a thrill they still relive today: “the 11-year-old who sang Rihanna.”
