The Judges Didn’t Even Recognize Him… Then He Sang Bad Day and the Whole Room Lit Up

Daniel Powter presented himself as simply another aspiring singer-songwriter when he entered the Canada’s Got Talent stage in 2024. The turn of events? He was the creator of “Bad Day,” one of the biggest pop successes of the 2000s, so he wasn’t at all a novice. Even the judges first didn’t seem to recognize him because the production presented it as a surprise entrance.

He then took a seat at the piano and began to sing. Recognition swept throughout the room as soon as Bad Day started. When the audience and judges realized they were witnessing the original artist play the song that made him famous, what had begun as a straightforward audition evolved into a full-blown surge of nostalgia. Powter clarified that, despite the song’s widespread popularity, he had never truly had the opportunity to sing it on Canadian television, so it wasn’t just a gimmick cameo either.

By the conclusion, the performance seemed more like a full-circle experience than a competition audition. The judges were obviously impressed, the audience was grinning, and Powter received favorable votes from each of the four judges. The biggest surprise on a talent competition isn’t always a hidden amateur; sometimes it’s discovering a recognized voice has been in front of you the entire time.
