82-Year-Old Grandpa Walks Onstage Quietly… Then Screams a Metal Classic and Blows the Roof Off

When 82-year-old John Hetlinger stepped onto the America’s Got Talent stage, he looked like the last person you’d expect to sing heavy metal. A retired aerospace engineer, former Navy pilot and onetime Hubble Telescope program manager, he introduced himself calmly, with the gentle energy of a sweet grandpa. The audience smiled politely, clearly expecting a hymn, an old standard… anything but what came next.

When the backing track kicked in and John launched into “Bodies” by Drowning Pool, the entire theatre went into shock. His gravelly roar of “LET THE BODIES HIT THE FLOOR!” had jaws dropping and people either screaming with laughter, cheering, or just standing frozen in disbelief. He didn’t just joke his way through it either — he committed 100%, screaming his way through the chorus like a seasoned metal frontman having the time of his life.

The judges rode the same roller coaster as the crowd: from confusion, to shock, to pure admiration. Simon Cowell went red in the face from laughing and grinning, and while Heidi Klum said no, Howie Mandel, Mel B and Simon all voted “Yes”, sending John through to the next round and turning his audition into an instant viral classic.

John’s performance racked up millions of views online and even reached Drowning Pool themselves, who later invited him onstage to perform “Bodies” live with the band — proof that you’re never too old to scream, rock out, and steal the show. For one unforgettable night, an 82-year-old karaoke fan from Colorado became metal’s unlikeliest hero.
