Laura Bretan appeared composed, reserved, and much younger than the voice she was going to unleash when she took the stage on America’s Got Talent. Most people in the audience were unaware that they were going to see one of the most memorable opera performances of the season when the 13-year-old Romanian-American soprano from Chicago went to audition.
She then started singing.
The mood shifted dramatically from the first note. The theater was filled with the kind of operatic power that typically takes years and years to develop thanks to Laura’s voice, which was soaring, clean, and incredibly controlled. The audience became silent as they were fully engrossed in the performance, and the judges’ expressions suddenly changed from interest to shock.
The contrast between the young girl standing there so calmly and then suddenly sounding like a world-class classical performer was what made the experience so memorable. It seemed emotional, sophisticated, and much beyond her years, in addition to being technically stunning. Laura, who had already won Romania’s Got Talent in 2016, finished in sixth place on AGT Season 11 thanks to that audition.
