The Voice of Heritage: How Sharon Ward Found Her True Self on the IGT Stage
Every performer wants to make a good impression, but sometimes that means trying to be something you’re not. That was the powerful lesson learned by Sharon Ward, a proud Irish Traveler from Longford, during her emotional audition on Ireland’s Got Talent. Sharon initially stepped onto the star to perform a soulful version of the Ben E. King classic, “Stand By Me.” While her voice was undeniably strong, the judges felt something was missing—the real Sharon.
In a rare moment of guidance, the judges stopped her and asked why she wasn’t singing something closer to her roots. When Sharon admitted she loved traditional Irish music, specifically the work of Finnbar Furey, she was invited to sing a few bars of “Sweet 16.” The atmosphere in the room shifted instantly. Singing in her own natural accent and from the depths of her heritage, Sharon’s second performance was so moving you could have heard a pin drop. Michelle Visage praised her for being an “unapologetic” role model for her children, while Louis Walsh admitted the song made him incredibly emotional, reminding him of his own grandmother. Sharon walked away with four “yeses” and a valuable lesson: always stay true to who you are.
The episode also featured the return of Jake O’Shea, who delivered a high-octane semi-final performance that Jason Byrne described as the arrival of a new era in dance. Jake’s signature fusion of traditional Irish step and modern commercial dance—dubbed “Jake Olay” by Michelle Visage—earned him a thunderous standing ovation. With his family cheering from the sidelines, Jake proved that tradition is most powerful when it’s allowed to evolve.
