The Art of the Shoe: Sangsoon Kim Redefines Visual Magic on the AGT Stage
When a magician steps onto the America’s Got Talent stage, the judges are often braced for standard card tricks or grand illusions. However, 28-year-old Sangsoon Kim from South Korea completely reinvented the genre with a display of close-up, high-speed visual trickery that focused entirely on a highly unusual prop: shoes. Before his performance, the former South Korean military service member brought a wave of confident humor to the room, playfully telling Simon Cowell that he decided to audition because he believed he was “better” than his friend and former AGT finalist, Yu Hojjin.
Sangsoon’s routine was a masterclass in modern, fast-paced illusion. Set to a smooth, contemporary soundtrack, he manipulated pairs of sneakers and dress shoes with impossible speed. Shoes instantly changed color with a flick of his wrist, shrunk to a fraction of their size, multiplied into dozens of pairs across the table, and at one point, transformed into an entirely different style of footwear right before the judges’ eyes. The sheer speed and seamless execution of the act left the panel completely transfixed, unable to spot a single hidden movement.
The feedback was overwhelmingly ecstatic. Simon Cowell praised the originality of the routine, noting that while many magic acts on the show can feel unoriginal and flat, Sangsoon’s performance was fresh, interesting, and deeply unique to his persona. Heidi Klum admitted she couldn’t wait to go home and rewatch the footage frame-by-frame to figure out how it was done, while Sofia Vergara celebrated the fact that the act was unlike anything they had ever seen before. With a well-deserved, unanimous sweep of four “yeses,” Sangsoon Kim proved that his confidence was entirely justified, walking away as one of the most memorable magicians of the season.
