The Voice of a Soldier: How Paul Ieti Turned the AGT Stage into a Battlefield of Emotion
In one of the most unexpected auditions of the season, Paul Ieti, a 21-year-old active-duty soldier in the U.S. Army, showed the world that courage comes in many forms. Originally from American Samoa and stationed in Georgia, Paul had recently returned from a nine-month deployment to Afghanistan. Before he sang, he shared a moving story of how music was his “escape” during the darkest and most terrifying moments of deployment, providing comfort not only to himself but to his “battle buddies” who would ask him to sing just to feel a little closer to home.
When Paul stepped into the spotlight, he appeared shy, unassuming, and visibly nervous. However, the moment he began his rendition of Rihanna’s “Stay,” the entire atmosphere of the auditorium shifted. His voice, a delicate yet powerful falsetto, possessed a soulfulness that nobody expected from a soldier trained for combat. The contrast between his military background and the sheer vulnerability of his performance left the judges and the audience in a state of hushed awe.
The judges were unanimous in their praise, with many admitting they were worried he might “blow it” because of his nerves. Howard Stern, Mel B, and Heidi Klum were floored by the “superstar” quality of his voice, noting that he had a unique ability to captivate and move everyone in the room. Paul Ieti’s audition served as a powerful reminder that behind every uniform is a human story, and sometimes the softest voice can have the greatest impact. With four enthusiastic “yeses,” Paul proved that he belongs on the stage just as much as he belongs in the service of his country.
