He Could Barely Leave the House for 7 Years… Then One Song Changed Everything

Just being present on The X Factor stage in 2009 was a significant success in and of itself. Before mustering the bravery to try out, Scott, who has Asperger’s condition, reportedly battled bullying and anxiety so severely that he hardly left his home for seven years.

When he introduced himself, he appeared somber, tense, and quite anxious, but as soon as he started singing “You Raise Me Up,” everything changed. What appeared to be a terrifying moment turned into one of the most poignant auditions of the series as his voice came out rich, expressive, and far more powerful than anyone had anticipated.

The juxtaposition of a young man who had spent years hiding from the public suddenly appearing in front of a sizable crowd and singing with genuine strength and emotion was what made the performance so powerful. According to reports at the time, the judges were astounded by both his performance of the song and the bravery required for him to stand there at all.

Scott’s audition turned into one of those X Factor moments that people remember not only for his voice but also for what it stood for: courage, fear, and the strength of coming out of hiding after years.
