From the Shadows to the Spotlight: Hit Songwriter Ed Drewett Stuns BGT
The Britain’s Got Talent stage is often reserved for undiscovered gems, but every so often, a seasoned professional decides it’s finally their time to step out from behind the curtain. That was the case for 25-year-old Ed Drewett, a prolific songwriter who has already penned massive global hits like One Direction’s “Best Song Ever” and The Wanted’s “Glad You Came.” Despite his incredible success as a writer, Ed admitted that he had a burning passion to be a performer in his own right, leading him to take the risk of auditioning for the show.
Ed chose to perform an original song titled “Blink,” an anthem about finding inner strength during difficult times. The audience and the judges were immediately struck by the “star quality” of the track—a catchy, polished, and radio-ready record that David Walliams claimed he wanted to download immediately. Alesha Dixon praised the storytelling lyrics, noting that songwriters are the “real stars” because they create the foundation for everything the audience hears. Ed’s natural charisma and “no socks” look (which he jokingly blamed on “sweaty ankles”) only added to his relatability and charm.
The judges’ reaction was a landslide of support, earning him a clean sweep of four “yeses” in his initial audition. However, during his semi-final performance, the panel was slightly more divided. While Simon Cowell and Alesha Dixon remained huge fans of his songwriting prowess and hit-making potential, Simon noted that Ed’s vocals were much more comfortable in the lower registers than in the high choruses. Despite the constructive criticism, the judges took their hats off to Ed for his humility, proving that no matter how many hits you have, chasing your dream is a journey that never truly ends.
