Too Young to Sound Like That! 17-Year-Old Daniel Joyner Delivers a Stunning Soul Classic on AGT!

The Voice of an Old Soul: 17-Year-Old Daniel Joyner Stuns the AGT Judges

The America’s Got Talent stage is no stranger to teenage singers, but every so often, a young performer steps up with a vocal maturity that completely catches the room off guard. That was exactly the case when 17-year-old Daniel Joyner walked out to audition. Hailing from Alamo, a tiny town right in the buckle of West Tennessee’s Bible Belt, Daniel exuded traditional southern politeness, introducing himself with a tailored look and a mild-mannered charm. As a high school senior faced with the pressure of picking a practical college path, Daniel admitted that his heart has always truly belonged to performing.

Walking out onto the largest stage of his life—having previously only sung in front of a couple hundred people—Daniel announced he would be covering Otis Redding’s classic soulful ballad, “Try a Little Tenderness.” The moment he began to sing, his smooth, deep tone instantly filled the room, carrying a rich, old-school resonance that completely defied his teenage years. As the track built to its energetic, fast-paced rhythm, Daniel began pushing his vocal limits, hitting massive soul notes that brought the auditorium to a roaring applause.

The feedback from the panel was overwhelmingly positive, albeit paired with some constructive tough love. Heidi Klum praised his beautiful tone but noted he seemed a bit stiff at the start, while Mel B urged him to break out of his shell and “let loose,” pointing out that he has the raw chops to step outside of his comfort zone. Simon Cowell echoed the sentiment, playfully joking that his voice was so remarkably polished for a 17-year-old that if he were Michael Bublé, he’d want to run him over. Despite the notes on his stiff stage presence, the panel was entirely unified on his raw talent, handing Daniel a clean sweep of four “yeses” and sending him to the next round with host Nick Cannon advising him side-stage to finally loosen up his tie.
