He’s Just 15… But When He Starts Michael Jackson, the Judges Can’t Believe Their Ears

When 15-year-old Joel Goncalves walked onto The X Factor Australia stage, he looked like a normal, slightly shy schoolboy. He admitted he’d never sung for more than a handful of people at once — and now he was standing in front of a huge arena and four very tough judges.

Then he dropped his song choice: “The Girl Is Mine” by Michael Jackson. Big risk for a teenager… but the second he started singing, the whole room felt it. Joel’s tone was smooth and soulful, with that gentle, youthful vibe that instantly reminded everyone of early MJ. His phrasing, control and natural groove were miles beyond what anyone expected from a 15-year-old.

The judges’ faces said it all — raised eyebrows, big smiles, and that “wait, WHAT?” look as he glided through the melody like he’d been doing this for years. The crowd went from curious to screaming, and by the final chorus people were already on their feet. When he finished, he got a huge standing ovation and four easy “yes” votes.

That one performance didn’t just wow the judges — it launched Joel toward a real music career, later releasing his own songs under the name Joel Adams. Not bad for a kid who started out hoping he’d just make it through one song.
